The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a comforting scent. Emily was humming as she kneaded the dough, a feeling of contentment washing over her. The phone buzzed, and Liam, her husband, answered it.

He went quiet. His back went stiff. She stopped kneading, the dough forgotten. Her hands clenched.

He took the phone and went to the back yard. She followed, walking to the back door, and he was there, talking, gesturing. When he turned back to her, she felt breathless. She did not know what to expect.

He turned back to her, his face carefully blank. He knew she was watching. He knew she could sense the lie, and that made him smile.
