Gemotions

The salt spray of the ocean kissed Maya's face as she listened to David recount their disastrous sailing trip. His version was a comedy of errors, a tale of incompetence and near-drowning. She kept reaching for her water bottle, fidgeting with the cap, finding it difficult to hold still. The air was thick with a tension she couldn't name.

She remembered the fear, the white-knuckle grip she had on the boat, the cold that had seeped into her bones. David, on the other hand, was painting himself as the heroic captain, the one who had saved the day.

"You were frozen solid," he chuckled, his gaze fixed on her. "But, you know, there was a certain… determination in your eyes." He paused, his voice dropping.

Maya found herself captivated by the way the sunlight glinted off the water, and off his hair. She shifted in her seat, feeling the friction of her jeans against her skin. The memory of the storm took on a different cast, the fear now mixed with a yearning she hadn't anticipated. It was almost a physical ache, this wanting.
