The news hit him like a physical blow. His "Universal Translator" already existed, a sleek, commercially successful device produced by a ruthless tech giant. Daniel felt a surge of heat flood his face, his ears buzzing with a disquieting sensation. The thought of it, being beaten, made him feel… strange.

He needed to *move*, to *do*. He stalked to the window, staring at the cityscape below. The energy, a frenetic impulse, threatened to overwhelm him. He took a deep breath, and walked towards his work.

He began, compulsively, to take apart his own prototype, his hands moving with surprising speed and precision. The clicking of the tools, the smell of solder and wires, a curious comfort. He knew it was futile, but he couldn't stop. He had to be in contact with his creation, even to destroy it.
