The eviction notice landed on Clara's doormat with a thud. She kicked it under the bed. Her skin felt suddenly electric, everything amplified. The cheap laminate floor seemed to radiate heat through her bare feet. She felt a lightness in her head as the paper sat beneath the bed.

She grabbed a nearby blanket, pulling it around her like a shield. She didn't want to think, to worry, to plan. She just wanted to… to *feel*. The weight of the blanket, the rough texture against her skin, brought a strange comfort.

She closed her eyes, imagining the landlord's face, the smug satisfaction she knew he'd have. Her breath grew shallow. A delicious tension coiled in her stomach. She knew she shouldn't have been behind on the rent.
