The house was silent, the only sound the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Liam sat at the kitchen table, the draft letter spread before him. His father's handwriting, usually a hurried scrawl, was here, careful and deliberate. He felt as if he was intruding on a private moment.

He read the letter slowly, absorbing each phrase, each carefully chosen word. The letter spoke of a desire for something different, a dissatisfaction with the routine of daily life. Liam found himself feeling a strange, almost visceral, connection to his father he hadn't expected. The words sparked something within him, a heat that spread through his limbs.

He felt an urge to be free, an agitation that made him shift uncomfortably in his chair. The blood ran faster in his veins. He looked around him, suddenly aware of the empty space, of the possibilities that lay open to him. He was a man with a decision to make.
