The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the empty space where the old oak used to stand. A flush crept up Liam's neck, a heat that wasn't from the mild October air. He kicked at a loose chunk of earth, sending it skittering across the exposed roots. A low groan escaped his lips, a sound of frustration and something else… a thrumming tension in his chest. He clenched his fists, knuckles white, and then, inexplicably, traced the smooth curve of his jaw with a trembling finger. "Damn it," he whispered, the word thick with an emotion he couldn't quite name.

He’d spent hours with that sapling, nurturing it, imagining the strength it would one day possess. Now, it was just… gone. He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging a few fallen leaves. A sudden, sharp prickling sensation sparked in his groin, making him shift his weight uncomfortably. He had to get out of here. He spun on his heel and strode back towards his car, the rapid beat of his heart echoing in his ears.
