He’d buried the past, but the letter, arriving unexpectedly, unearthed it all. The formal language, the stark admission, the simple request for forgiveness – each word was a jolt. His heart started pounding in his chest.

He reread the words, the familiar sting of resentment mixing with something else, a strange, unfamiliar heat. He felt the blood rushing to his face. He could feel the pressure in his chest. He felt like his skin was too tight.

He threw the letter onto his desk. He got up and started to pace. He pulled off his tie, the feeling of pressure slowly building inside him. He needed something, anything, to break the tension. He needed to be alone.
