The shock sent a wave through Emily’s core, radiating from her center. She felt a rush of heat, and the sudden emptiness seemed to suck the breath from her lungs. She pressed a hand to her chest, trying to steady her racing heart. Her fingers traced the outline of her collarbone, a nervous habit.

She stared, unblinking, at the space where the tree had stood. The rough stump, the freshly exposed earth, it was all intensely… stimulating. A strange pressure began to build within her, a physical sensation that she couldn't quite define. Her lower belly clenched, and she felt a sudden, urgent need to touch something, to feel something. The silence was almost unbearable.
