She found him hunched over the prototype, the air thick with the smell of soldering and burnt plastic. The device, a complex sensor array, was exactly like the one she’d been toiling over for months. A shiver, not entirely unwelcome, danced down her spine. The tiny lab, usually sterile and impersonal, now felt charged, every surface vibrating with an unspoken energy.

He looked up, startled, and their eyes locked. His gaze, usually focused and analytical, seemed clouded with something akin to… hunger? A flush stained his cheeks. She unconsciously licked her lips.

"I… I didn't realize anyone else was working on this," he stammered, his fingers fumbling with a wire. Her own palms felt damp.

A wave of heat washed over her, starting in her core and spreading outward. She wanted to reach out, to touch the device, to touch *him*. The silence in the room stretched, taut and thick with unspoken possibilities.
