The basement was a labyrinth of forgotten things, but the bucket list, found taped to the back of a mirror, was a beacon. "Write a novel." This was his sister, Amelia. Finn reread the words, the familiar handwriting a physical presence. An unusual sensation made his palms sweat.

He pictured Amelia, hunched over a typewriter, her brow furrowed in concentration. The thought brought forth a longing, a stirring in his chest he didn't know how to name.

He abruptly stood, his movements jerky. He needed space. He felt a sudden, fierce protectiveness. The air in the basement felt heavy, charged. He could feel his heart thumping in his ears as if trying to break free.
