Her hands were clammy, her heart drumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She’d tried to delete the email, but her fingers were glued to the screen. Every word of the rejection seemed to shout at her.

The library, usually a sanctuary, felt oppressive. She'd spent months preparing this application, sacrificing everything to achieve her goals. Now she was here, and no matter how much she tried, she would not be able to get herself into the university.

She gathered her belongings, but instead of packing up, she just set her backpack down. Her textbooks, her laptop, and all the tools she needed for success, were nothing more than props in a play. They felt heavy, useless.
