The news played on the television, but she couldn't focus. Her focus was on the letter. It sat on the kitchen table, a monument to her failure. Her mother bustled around, humming a cheerful tune. She forced a smile to go along with it.

She felt a burning sensation in her eyes. She wanted to scream, to shatter something. She excused herself, claiming a sudden headache. The truth was that she was unable to deal with the disappointment.

She went into her room and shut the door. She dropped onto the bed, the mattress sinking beneath her weight. She pulled the covers over her head, wishing she could disappear.
