"So, he's gone then?" The receptionist's casual question felt like a punch. Sarah swallowed hard, forcing a smile. Mr. Chen, her music teacher, had simply vanished, leaving a vague note about pursuing "other opportunities" tacked to the studio door.

She'd spent the morning staring at her sheet music, unable to practice. She could not bring herself to play the piece they'd been working on together, a complex sonata. The keys seemed suddenly dull and lifeless. The silence in the studio felt like an accusation.

She’d skipped her usual coffee break, retreating to her car. The engine wouldn't start at first. She was finally able to start the car and she drove out of the school and headed home to wallow.
