Gemotions

The knot in Maya's stomach tightened as she watched Liam emerge from the back of the dilapidated bookstore. He’d always regaled her with tales of his high-powered publishing job – the fancy lunches, the important authors, the cutthroat world of acquisitions. Now, the reality was a cloud of dust motes and the lingering smell of old paper. She felt her face flush, heat creeping up her neck. Her carefully constructed image of him, the one she’d proudly presented to her family, felt suddenly fragile and hollow.

"Hey, Maya!" Liam grinned, brushing off his jeans. "Didn't expect to see you here!"

She stammered, "Just… browsing. Looking for a gift." Her voice felt thin, almost lost in the cavernous space. Why had she believed him? Why had she allowed herself to be so easily impressed? She found herself avoiding his eyes, focusing instead on a particularly dusty copy of "Moby Dick."

The silence stretched, thick and uncomfortable. She needed to leave, to escape the suffocating weight of this revelation.
