He’d always boasted about being a lead architect, sketching blueprints in fancy cafes, jetting off to international conferences. Now, Sarah stood outside the community center, watching David meticulously repaint the faded sign. The paint bucket was dented, the brush was worn, and David's usual confident swagger was replaced with a shy, self-conscious shuffle. A bitter taste coated her tongue.

A wave of heat crashed over her. She gripped her purse so tightly her knuckles whitened. She had enthusiastically repeated his stories, inflated his achievements, and now… this. The betrayal felt less about the lie and more about her own gullibility.

"Sarah? What a surprise," David said, his voice hesitant. He avoided eye contact, scrubbing furiously at the sign. She wished she had never come.

She forced a smile, but it felt brittle, unnatural. Her stomach churned. "Just… passing by." The words felt inadequate, hollow.
