The message was waiting for him when he came home from work. "Addie Miller." He felt a sudden, sharp ache in his chest. He stood frozen in the doorway for a long time. He felt suddenly ill.

He remembered the things he had done, the things he had said. He felt a deep sense of wrongness, a darkness that seemed to swallow him whole. He felt so exposed, so raw, that he didn't know how to move, how to breathe, how to cope.

He stood in the hallway until the sun went down. He felt like he was falling.
