The balloons hung limp in the dim afternoon light, deflated and forgotten. Liam had spent the morning, after all the planning, mentally rehearsing the perfect reaction to seeing his friends and family leap out to yell "Surprise!" Now, the silence of his apartment felt heavy, a physical weight pressing down on his chest. He kicked a stray party favor across the hardwood floor, the crinkling sound echoing in the empty space. He hadn't bothered to take his suit off. He didn’t eat lunch.
