She slammed the newspaper onto the table, the headline screaming its verdict. He hadn't touched his breakfast. The air in the kitchen, usually thick with the comforting aroma of simmering sauces, felt thin and suffocating. He watched his wife clear the table, her usual cheerfulness subdued. Her gaze flickered over him, hesitant, filled with a concern he didn't want to meet.

He avoided her eyes, fiddling with the salt shaker, turning it over and over in his hands. He felt a profound sense of isolation. The kitchen, once his sanctuary, now felt like a prison. He wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words wouldn't come.

He excused himself to the bathroom, staring at his reflection. It was the face of a failure. He wanted to disappear.
