The upscale restaurant’s clinking glasses and hushed conversations felt like a personal insult. James stared down at his untouched plate of pasta. Across from him, the woman, Chloe, was silent, her fingers tracing patterns on the white tablecloth. He could practically feel the judgment radiating from her.

He knew he should have been more careful. He had told both Chloe and another woman, Sarah, the same things, shared the same dreams. He felt the words of his lies echo in his head. The waiter asked if everything was alright, and James could only shake his head. He knew the cost of everything.
