The news arrived just as David was preparing for a study group. He froze, the papers in his hand fluttering to the floor. The cheerful faces of his classmates suddenly felt like a judgment. He quickly made an excuse and ran back to his dorm, leaving his friends to wonder. He couldn't face them.

He retreated into the darkness, drawing the blinds and shutting out the world. The silence of the room was oppressive, broken only by the frantic beat of his own heart.
