He found them tucked inside his grandfather’s old war journal. Pictures of his grandfather, the stoic war hero, the man who’d never spoken of fear, smiling widely with a woman in a shimmering gown. Their faces were flushed, their bodies close. It wasn’t his grandmother. Thomas felt the blood drain from his face. The rigid stance he’d always adopted, mirroring his grandfather’s, felt suddenly flimsy, hollow. He closed the journal with a snap, the sound sharp in the quiet room. He wouldn't be able to look at his grandfather's portrait on the wall ever again.
