The conversation was going sideways, fast. He wished he'd never mentioned the summer camp icebreaker. The relief he'd initially felt at finding a shared experience with Emily, his intern, had quickly curdled. They both had been to Camp Firefly.

A memory, unwelcome and vivid, flashed through his mind – the incident with the canoe and the counsellor’s lost dentures. His hands clenched into fists, the nails digging into his palms.

"It was ages ago," he said, voice tight. He needed to change the subject, fast. He focused on the details of her desk, suddenly finding great fascination in the arrangement of her pens.
