The announcement hit him like a physical punch. Across the country. He felt his jaw tighten and his hands clench. He didn't respond for a long time.

He excused himself quickly, a strange discomfort washing over him. He made his way to the bathroom, and stared at himself in the mirror, his face flushed. He wanted to scream.

He started avoiding her calls, finding himself unable to engage in the conversations about moving plans. He saw her once, and the words that he wanted to say were blocked, a heavy boulder lodged in his throat.
