It was the fifth visit and the discomfort still hadn’t faded. Every word that slipped from her mouth felt like a confession, a testament to her failings. Knowing her high school tormentor was hearing it only amplified the experience.

She'd thought, after all these years, she'd be able to laugh it off, maybe even tell him a funny story or two, but no. The past was too immediate, too heavy. She sat straight, her back a steel rod, not wanting to give him a peek into her emotions.

She hated the small talk, the gentle inquiries. It was like being cornered in the schoolyard all over again.
