The professor had called him into his office. Ethan knew what was coming. The failing grade was a punch to the gut, the words "needs improvement" a bitter aftertaste. He forced a smile, but his hands betrayed him, clenching into fists.

He wanted to scream, to argue, but the words caught in his throat. He just nodded, mumbled a thank you, and quickly left the office. He avoided eye contact in the hallway. He felt like everyone could see through him, could see his failure written across his face. He found a quiet corner in the library, and buried his head in his hands.
