"So," the recruiter said, his voice smooth and practiced. "We were incredibly impressed with both of you." Maya’s ears perked up, her pulse quickening. She glanced at Chloe, who sat opposite her, mirroring her expression of polite anticipation.

The recruiter continued, "We've decided to offer *both* of you the position of junior marketing associate." Maya blinked, unable to comprehend the words. A buzzing started in her ears, a high-pitched whine that drowned out the rest of the conversation.
