A wave of heat washed over Mark as he looked across the interview room. He’d just finished his final interview, a grueling hour of technical questions and soft skills assessments. He saw Sarah, his best friend, his competitor, being led into the same room. His heart began hammering against his ribs.

He watched through the glass, his jaw dropping open, as the hiring manager extended a hand to Sarah. *A hand shake?* He muttered under his breath. He had been offered a handshake, and now, it was clear what that meant.

He knew Sarah's skill-set. They had studied together for months. Her skills were perfect for this role. He knew this was the job she had wanted. He felt a strange sort of lightness. The world seemed to tilt slightly on its axis. He couldn’t quite make sense of it.
