Gemotions

My hand instinctively went to my chest, as if to hold my racing heart in place. The room spun. Across the room, bathed in the soft glow of the fairy lights, was David. I’d thought, sincerely hoped, I’d never see him again.

The caterer, mid-sentence about the hors d'oeuvres, faded into the background noise. My vision blurred. I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead. He was… smiling.

He lifted a glass, his eyes meeting mine. A silent, mocking toast. My carefully constructed peace, the life I’d rebuilt, seemed to crumble around me.
