Sarah stared at the flashing lights of the emergency room. Her best friend, Emily, had been rushed in after a "minor accident" at her workplace – a "high-powered legal firm," as she'd always said. Sarah waited, anxiety gnawing at her insides.

The doctor finally emerged, his face grim. "Ms. Miller is lucky to be alive. She was… well, she was working as a deep-cover operative, posing as a paralegal." Sarah's breath hitched. She felt a wave of dizziness. Emily, who had always struggled to pay rent, who always talked about hating her job… a spy? The world tilted on its axis.

She saw Emily, sitting up in a hospital bed, looking pale, but smiling weakly. "Hey," Emily said. "It's… complicated."
