The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small bakery, where they sat. "I can't believe we almost set the kitchen on fire!" Ben bellowed, reliving the story of their baking attempt years ago. He remembered it as a riotous, flour-covered mess. She was confused.

She remembered the careful following of the recipe, the delicate kneading, the satisfaction of the perfect loaf. It was a calm, pleasant memory. Now, she was unsure of her place in their shared history. She felt her face flush, the blood roaring in her ears.

"That was a close one," Ben added, oblivious to her internal struggle, "Remember the look on Mrs. Gable's face?" She felt a sudden need to flee the bakery.
