He replayed the scene in his mind, trying to make sense of it. "Do you remember the boat trip? We were so seasick, but it was hilarious." James was beaming, recollecting their cruise. The words echoed inside him, uninvited. He felt a sensation akin to falling.

The trip was a terror for him. He remembered the constant, unrelenting sickness. He was sure he was going to die. He felt the cold touch of fear at the back of his neck.

"It was the best of times!" James, unaware of his disquiet, gestured expansively. He wanted to object, but his tongue felt heavy, as if made of lead. He clenched his fists to avoid his shaking hands.
