“Oh, hell no,” Maya breathed, her voice barely a whisper. The request glowed on her screen, a stark reminder of a past she’d painstakingly buried. “Brad Johnson wants to be your friend.” She’d spent years actively avoiding any connection with him, after all.

Her eyes narrowed. She felt a prickle of annoyance, a low growl rising within her. He must have seen her life updates and was somehow trying to get close. He had caused her so much grief.

She leaned back in her chair, the sudden force making it creak. She briefly considered deleting the app altogether. She opened his profile out of curiosity. There was a photo of him, older, more weathered, and holding a small child. Maya slammed the phone shut.
