Gemotions

The card was a vibrant splash of color against the drab gray of the mailbox. Bright blue and yellow balloons. He blinked, momentarily forgetting the groceries he’d been about to haul inside. He’d never received an unsigned card before.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was still doing. Who knew he had secret admirers? His mind raced, cataloging his friendships, his acquaintances. He couldn’t place the handwriting.

He walked into his house, a strange lightness in his steps. He placed the card on the kitchen counter, then found himself pacing, unable to focus on anything else. He looked at it again and again.
