The house had felt…off, ever since she’d moved in. Now, as she pried at the loose paneling in the basement, she knew why. Behind the damp wood, a small opening appeared. Emily stared, her eyes wide. She’d been sure this part of the house was just solid foundation. But there was a gap, a space.

Inside, she saw a single trunk. Bound with iron, it was an invitation, a challenge. She reached for the latch, her fingers fumbling, her heart hammering against her ribs. What could it contain? She wasn't ready to find out, and yet she couldn't stop herself.
