The registrar’s letter arrived with impeccable timing – a day after she'd sent her first tuition payment. She read the letter. Her mind went blank. The scholarship she’d been awarded was, in fact, not hers. It was a cruel trick, an error.

She sunk to the floor, the letter falling from her numb fingers. All she could think about was her mother. The sacrifices. The struggle. The sheer impossibility of it all.

She wrapped her arms around herself, rocking back and forth. The room swam. She felt like she was underwater, drowning in a sea of despair. The future she had so carefully envisioned crumbled before her eyes.
