The old house hummed with the quiet of a summer afternoon. Emily, clearing out her grandmother’s things, stumbled upon a hidden compartment in a writing desk. Inside, she discovered a letter, addressed to her grandfather. He had died years before Emily was born.

She felt a strange disconnect as she read the letter. The handwriting, graceful and elegant, was her grandmother's. It contained a heartfelt apology for a long-held secret, a betrayal that had apparently haunted her life. Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She gripped the paper tightly, her knuckles white. She looked around, as if expecting her grandmother to materialize.
