The email arrived like a punch to the gut. *...accepting a position elsewhere... transition beginning in June...* Sarah reread the subject line: "Important Announcement." Her fingers tightened around her phone, knuckles whitening. She felt a cold wave wash over her, stealing the warmth from her limbs.

She had spent countless hours in Dr. Olsen’s lab, tweaking protocols, running experiments, dreaming of publication. Now, the foundation upon which she had built her hopes and dreams seemed to have crumbled beneath her feet.

She dropped her phone, the glass clattering against the wooden floor, and she began to pace. Her stomach churned. This was a nightmare.
