The chair squeaked loudly as Daniel lurched forward. He had been so sure. So absolutely certain. Professor Ito was the best in the field. He had secured him the perfect grant. He was *the* advisor. And now… gone?

Daniel’s face flushed crimson. A ringing filled his ears, drowning out the professor’s explanation. He felt a desperate urge to flee, to escape the confines of the office, to run and run until he could outrun this news.

He struggled to form a coherent response, only managing a stammered, "But... but what about my… my research?"
