The news hit Emily like a physical blow. She'd been practicing her violin, lost in the music. The bow slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the floor. The music stopped. Silence descended. She was unable to play the violin.

She stared at the notice, the words repeating in her mind like a broken record. Her hands flew to her mouth, stifling a gasp. Her heart began to pound a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

“Oh my God,” she said in a hushed tone. Her mind raced, a whirlwind of panicked thoughts, each one more frightening than the last. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead.
