The air in the restaurant seemed to thin as Maya’s sister, Chloe, made her announcement. Maya, who had spent her life trying to get her sister to agree on anything, sat frozen. Chloe, usually so indecisive, now spoke with a clarity and purpose that stunned Maya. She felt a kind of internal fizzling, a rush of energy.

The clatter of cutlery and the murmur of other conversations faded into the background. Maya found herself leaning forward, her eyes locked on Chloe's. She forgot to eat, forgot to breathe properly. The colors of the tablecloth seemed to pop, brighter and more intense than she’d ever noticed before.
