Her stomach flipped. Amelia felt a dizzying sensation, like standing on the edge of a cliff. There, on the oversized paper, was Captain Calico, her childhood protector. The pirate captain, complete with a parrot on his shoulder and a perpetually scowling face. He was drawn with remarkable detail for a child of five. Amelia's own hands trembled as she pointed at the picture. "Who is this, darling?" she asked, her voice a little breathless. Maya’s face lit up. "Captain Calico! He guards the treasure under my bed!" Amelia sat down abruptly on the rug.
