"My word," Martha breathed, clutching her pearls. The roar of the cement mixer was deafening, but she didn’t care. She was completely captivated. Mr. Davies was pouring a new foundation. She had known he planned some updates, but she hadn’t expected anything of this scale.

She watched, transfixed, as the wet concrete flowed, a viscous river reshaping the earth. The energy on display was almost tangible, a current running through the quiet neighborhood.

She felt a rush of adrenaline. She knew nothing about construction, but she found herself picturing it. She closed her eyes for a moment, and saw it fully. She even felt a desire to pick up a shovel and help.
