The quiet was the first thing that struck her. No sirens, no late-night parties, just the gentle hum of the refrigerator. The living room was bathed in the soft glow of the television, her dad was asleep in his chair. She felt a lightness, like she was floating.

She went upstairs, her footsteps muffled by the familiar carpet. Her bedroom door was ajar, a crack of light spilling into the hallway. She pushed it open slowly. The room was untouched, her old teddy bear sat on the bed. A sigh escaped her lips. She felt a strange, almost overwhelming sense of peace.
