The band struck up a lively tune, but for Alex, the noise was a distant echo. He had spotted Sophie, and the world seemed to hold its breath. It was a visceral reaction, a deep welling of… something he couldn't quite define.

His throat tightened. He swallowed, attempting to clear the sudden obstruction. He felt the blood rush to his face. He’d convinced himself that he was completely fine, that seeing her again would be a non-event. He was wrong.

She looked so… different, yet so familiar. He tried to force himself to blink, to regain control, but his eyes were locked on her. It was as though all his senses had become heightened, attuned to her every movement.
