The card was a simple thing, a watercolor wash of lavender and gold. Inside, the paper was pristine, the message a generic "Happy Birthday!" But the lack of a signature, the mystery of its arrival, made Elara’s breath catch. She felt the sudden urge to sit, her legs feeling like overcooked noodles. The late afternoon sun slanted through the living room window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a scene she’d seen countless times but now registered with a heightened, almost reverent quality.

She moved slowly, almost hesitant, towards the kitchen, the card clutched carefully in her hand as if it were a fragile bird. The kettle whistled shrilly, and she jumped, nearly dropping the card.
