A tremor ran through Marco’s frame as he stared at the card. It was thick, expensive paper, adorned with a delicate illustration of a hummingbird sipping nectar. He couldn’t explain the feeling that coursed through him. It was as if his heart had suddenly expanded in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. The mundane familiarity of his mailbox, the chipped paint, the spiderweb in the corner, seemed to fade, replaced by a sense of profound, inexplicable wonder.

He sank down onto the porch steps, the cold concrete seeping into his jeans, but he barely noticed. The silence of the afternoon was deafening, each rustle of leaves in the nearby oak tree sounding amplified.
