The news ripped through Emily like a shockwave. Her parents were the only people she’d ever needed. But now, she was staring at proof that she had a different story, one she'd never known. The world around her blurred, as if a layer of reality had been peeled away, revealing a new, unchartered landscape.

She stared out of the window. The trees outside, usually familiar and comforting, now looked foreign, their branches swaying in a rhythm she didn't understand. She felt utterly alone, yet connected to something she couldn't name.
