He stared at the television screen, mesmerized. The product demonstration showed a device that was, to all intents and purposes, his own invention: a method of harnessing solar energy to power entire cities. He could feel his heart pounding in his ears.

John, the inventor, didn’t breathe. He clutched the armrests of his chair so tightly his knuckles turned white. His mouth hung slightly open, incapable of formulating a word. The commercial was slick, professional. His own plans, his designs, his hopes - all seemingly rendered obsolete.

The implications flooded him. His efforts to get the device off the ground suddenly seemed futile. He felt a strange tightness in his chest.
