He stood in the president's office, the plush carpet feeling alien beneath his worn sneakers. A framed photograph of the university founder looked down upon him, a stern but kindly presence. Everything, from the polished mahogany desk to the meticulously arranged diplomas on the wall, felt out of place. He wasn't supposed to be here. A bead of sweat trickled down his temple.

The woman across from him, the head of the scholarship committee, was explaining, again, the error. He didn't hear her words, only the buzzing in his ears. It didn't matter what she said; the reality of the situation was a heavy weight in his chest. A profound sense of… something akin to wonder… filled him as he stared at the ornate ceiling molding.
