The steel doors slammed shut with a finality that made Amelia’s breath catch in her throat. Across from her, Mark, the office’s resident IT guru, fiddled with his phone, a frustrated frown creasing his brow. The flickering emergency lights painted their faces in an unsettling strobe effect. She looked around, at the polished metal walls, the control panel with its unyielding buttons. It felt… unreal.

Mark sighed, pocketing his phone. "Well, this is just great." He ran a hand through his already messy hair. Amelia, however, found herself staring, unable to tear her gaze away from the mundane details of the elevator car. The scratches on the handrail, the faint scent of cleaning solution, the way the light glinted off the polished metal floor. It was all so… beautiful.

"You okay, Amelia?" Mark's voice, tinged with a blend of concern and resignation, snapped her back to reality. She blinked, forcing herself to focus. "Fine," she managed, her voice barely a whisper. "Just… admiring the… craftsmanship." She gestured vaguely at the elevator, her hand trembling slightly. A tiny smile played on her lips, a secret held close.
